Bravery & Belonging: Emily Jenkinson on the Drive to Win and Claiming the Lineup
Emily Jenkinson is a name you’re going to be hearing a lot. The Kommetjie-based junior surfer is currently one of South Africa’s most exciting exports, proving that even when the path to the pros is steep, passion can bridge the gap.
We sat down with Emily to discuss what keeps her optimistic under pressure and how she’s using her platform to inspire the next generation of female surfers.
On the Drive to Compete
Representing South Africa internationally at 16 comes with its own set of pressures, but for Emily, the motivation is simple: the love of the game.
"My drive and optimism come from my passion and love for surfing," Emily explains. "Knowing that if I work hard enough I could get to travel to the world's best surf spots and make a living by doing what I love."

The African Advantage
While the international surf scene is crowded, Emily believes being a South African surfer offers a unique perspective, and a unique set of hurdles.
"It’s so much more challenging for South African surfers to make it professionally because there is less opportunity and less funding. That makes it so much more special when you can make it internationally."
The Uniform: The Nova in Tortoise
For a surfer whose life is lived between the glare of the Atlantic and the spotlight of international podiums, the right frames are essential. Emily’s go-to is the Nova in Tortoise.
With its sharp, upward flick and classic high-shine finish, the Nova mirrors Emily’s own high-energy approach to life. It’s a bold silhouette that doesn't compromise on sustainability; handmade from bio-acetate and designed to keep her vision clear as she navigates the waves ahead.

Making the Ocean a Space for Everyone
Emily isn't just winning trophies; she’s winning hearts by advocating for more inclusivity in the water. Her goal is to strip away the intimidation factor that keeps many young girls on the beach.
"I would love to make the ocean feel like it belongs to girls just as much as guys," she says. "Giving younger girls the confidence and encouragement to get in the water... so many people miss out on it because they aren’t brave enough or confident enough to try."

At Ballo, we’re proud to see Emily navigating the world with her eyes wide open - challenging the status quo and proving that the ocean belongs to whoever is brave enough to paddle out.
