Versatility & Vision: A Conversation with Eli Beukes

For Eli Beukes, creativity is a byproduct of being present. As a professional surfer and creative, his life is dictated by the rhythm of the coast and the diversity of the African continent. Having traveled extensively, he has developed a deep appreciation for the cultural richness that our world offers and he uses that inspiration to fuel his own work.

We caught up with Eli to talk about his go-to frames and why intentional production matters.

The Uniform: The Barnes in Matte Tortoise

Eli’s choice is the Barnes in Matte Tortoise, a frame that mirrors his own approach to style: versatile, timeless and detailed.

"The style versatility is something I really love about the frame," Eli says. "It goes with anything, and it’s a style that suits everyone. The combination between the Matte Tortoise and the gold [hardware] is such a great combo."

On Inspiration Beyond Borders

Traveling through Africa has taught Eli that being open-minded is the ultimate creative tool.

"It’s inspiring and can push your creativity into places you hadn’t thought of before if you’re open-minded and take inspiration from your surroundings," he explains. "Whether it be the music, the food, or the people you meet."

Craft That Lasts

At Ballo, we talk a lot about plant-based materials, but Eli reminded us of the other side of the sustainability coin: durability.

"The clear intent behind Ballo’s sustainability practices really drew me to the brand," Eli notes. "It’s important to create products that are environmentally conscious, but at the same time, are hardy and will last for a long time."
